Training

Class materials and completion certificates are provided for all students who complete a course.  All class participants must be law-abiding citizens who are not prohibited from being in possession of a firearm.

Courses:

Basic Pistol Shooting (8 hours)

This in-depth course teaches all major aspects of safely owning and operating a pistol.  Students will spend time in the classroom and on the range learning to shoot revolvers and semi-automatic pistols.  The following are a few of the areas covered in this course:
- Safe gun handling rules
- Parts and operation of pistols
- Ammunition components
- Shooting fundamentals
- Range rules
- Shooting position and techniques
- Cleaning the pistol
- Selecting the right handgun to purchase
- Continued opportunities for skills development

FIRST Steps Pistol Orientation (3.5 hours)
$100
The FIRST steps course is for gun owners and provides an introduction to your specific type of pistol.  It includes hands-on instruction with classroom and range time.  Students should expect to learn:
- Safe gun handling rules
- Parts and operation of a specific handgun
- Ammunition components
- Shooting fundamentals
- Cleaning your pistol
- Continued opportunities for skills development

Supplies needed:  Firearm, 50 rounds of ammunition, eye protection, and hearing protection

Home Firearm Safety (4 hours)
$100
This is a non-shooting course which teaches the foundation for knowing how to properly handle and store firearms and ammunition in your home.  Some of the topics covered in this course are:
- Safe gun handling rules
- Primary causes of firearms accidents
- Firearm parts
- Unloading a handgun, rifle, and shotgun
- Ammunition components
- Cleaning and care of handguns
- Safe storage options

Personal Protection in the Home (8 hours)
$125
In order to maximize the benefits of this course, all participants must be at least 21 years old and experienced shooters.  Proof of shooting experience can be any of the following:


- NRA Basic Pistol Shooting Course Certificate,

- NRA FIRST Steps Pistol Orientation Certificate,

- NRA pistol competitive shooting qualification card,

- DD214 with pistol qualification, or

- Passing the pre-course assessment

 

In this course, students will learn the basic knowledge, attitude, and skills needed to safely and efficiently use a handgun to protect themselves and family.   Students should expect to shoot approximately 100 rounds of ammunition and will learn:

- Defensive shooting safety

- Basic defensive shooting concepts and skills

- Aiming and firing strategies
- Strategies for home safety
- Responding to a violent confrontation

- Confronting an intruder or attacker

- Psychological and physiological reactions to a life-threatening encounter

- Interacting with law enforcement during or after an attack

- Emotional, legal, and social aftermath of a defensive shooting
- Firearms and the law (a one-hour presentation by a law enforcement officer)
- Selecting a firearm and ammunition for self-defense


Supplies needed:   Firearm (.38 caliber or larger), 100 rounds of ammunition, eye protection, and hearing protection

Personal Protection Outside the Home (14 hours)
$250
In order to maximize the benefits of this course, all participants must be at least 21 years old and experienced shooters who have attended the NRA’s Personal Protection Inside the Home training course.


In this course, students will learn the basic knowledge, skills, and attitude essential for avoiding dangerous confrontations and for the safe, effective and responsible use of a concealed pistol for self-defense outside the home. Students should expect to shoot approximately 215 rounds of ammunition. Students will learn:

 

- Defensive shooting safety
- Firearm storage options for outside the home
- Defensive shooting concepts and skills
- Aiming and firing techniques
- Handgun carry methods for outside the home
- Principles of concealed carry

- Methods of drawing a firearm from concealment

- Defensive shooting positions

- Strategies for avoiding confrontations outside the home

- Responding to an attack outside the home

- Dealing with an attacker outside the home

- Engaging multiple attackers

- Low-light defense strategies

- Psychological and physiological reactions to a life-threatening encounter

- How to interact with law enforcement during or after an attack

- Emotional, legal and social aftermath of a defensive shooting

- Firearms and the law (a one-hour presentation by a law enforcement officer)

Supplies needed:  Firearm (.38 caliber or larger), 215 rounds of ammunition, quality strong-side hip holster (must cover trigger) or holster purse, belt, extra magazine pouches (which attach to belt), eye protection, and hearing protection
